What Kind of Careers Can You Do with an MHA degree?
Getting an advanced degree, no matter what your field, leads to higher-paying jobs with more responsibility. If you work in health care administration, there are actually a number of different master’s degree programs in which you can enroll. One of your options is a masters of health administration, or MHA program, which prepares you for a number of leadership roles. Here is just a sampling of some of the careers paths you could go down if you have an MHA degree:
CEO or COO
No matter where you work or what kind of healthcare company you run, the top positions are that of the CEO (and president, in some cases) and the COO. With an MHA, you’ll be qualified to work in these top positions, which require you to make vital choices about the company. These are by far the highest-paying jobs in the healthcare administration world, on average (though many government jobs can also be quite lucrative).
Hospital Administrator
All hospitals have CEOs and COOs, and there are also other administrators to make sure that the facility runs smoothly. As a hospital administrator, you’ll work closely with the staff to regulate patient care, implement and uphold policies, and make judgment calls. This is a very high-pressure job, but hospital administrators can easily make over six figures per year.
Nursing Home Administrator
In all 50 states, you need to meet special requirements to become a licensed nursing home administrator, in part because nursing home abuse and neglect have been such big problems in the United States. As a nursing home administrator, you’ll oversee all of the staff responsible for patient care.
Practice Administrator
If you want a more intimate setting, working as an administrator for a private practice might be for you. This kind of administrative position is similar to that of a hospital administrative position, but you’ll work with a much smaller staff and a small number of patients. Average annual salary in this position is around $80,000, according to Payscale.com.
Consultant
Once you have experience in your field of choice, becoming a consultant is always an option. This is true in the medical administration world as it is in any other industry. By getting an MHA, you’re better prepared for a consulting career, though most opt to work in a leadership administrative position first.
These are not, by far, the only career paths available to you once you have an MHA. You can work in office management, health information management, insurance, medical supply sale, and more. There are also many positions for MHA degree holders in the government, at both the local/state and federal levels, so if you have an interest in policy-making, public service, and law, one of these positions might be right for you.
Remember, the stronger candidates are offered the better jobs, so if you want your pick of career paths, work to not only get your MHA, but also gain valuable experience in your field by helping your employers meet goals.
